LakewasbornonOctober25,1879,inSouthville,Massachusetts,andreceivedhiseducationinthe BrocktonpublicschoolsandNewEnglandConservatoryofMusic.Attheageof16,hewasaviolinist intheBostonSymphonyOrchestra,andat21hebecameconductoratthePayretTheaterinHavana, Cuba,thelargesttheaterintheWesternHemisphereatthattime. HethenmovedtoNewYorkCityanddidarrangingforanimpressivelistofcomposers,including VictorHerbert,GeorgeM.Cohen,PercyGrainger,EdwinFrankoGoldman,JohnPhilipSousa,Henry Hadley,andPaulWhiteman. In1913,hewasappointededitor-in-chiefofthebandandorchestradepartmentatCarlFischerand heldthispositionfor35years. ThediversityofLake'sworksrunsthegamutfrommarchesandpolkastoopera.Healsocomposed alargeamountofmusicforsilentfilmsthatwasplayedbytheatermusiciansasmoodmusic.His arrangementofMauriceRavel'sBolerowashighlypraisedbyRavel,himselfamasterorchestrator, andwasperformedfrequentlybythebandsofSousa,Goldman,andothersaroundtheworld. Lakediedattheageof75onMarch16,1955,inPalisades,NewJersey.
